How to sell a golf cart in South Africa (2026 guide)
The fastest, safest ways to sell a used golf cart in South Africa — what it's worth, where to sell it, the paperwork, and how to avoid the scams that target cart sellers on Gumtree and Facebook.
By the WeBuyCarts buying team, South Africa
Short answer: You have three realistic options in South Africa — sell privately (Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace, estate WhatsApp groups), trade it in at a dealer, or sell it to a specialist buyer like WeBuyCarts who makes a written offer from photos, collects for free and pays by EFT on the day. Most used carts change hands for R20 000 to R150 000, with lithium four- and six-seaters at the top of that range.
1. Know what it's worth before you list it
Start with our valuation guide. The five things that move the number, in order:
- Batteries. A lead-acid pack older than four years is close to end of life and a buyer will deduct R12 000–R25 000 for a new set. Factory lithium (or a documented conversion) adds a clear premium.
- Brand. Club Car (aluminium chassis, no rust) and Yamaha hold value best. E-Z-GO RXV beats the older TXT. Chinese brands (Excar, HDK, LVTong, Marshell) are valued mostly on battery type and the importer's parts support.
- Year. Expect 20–30% off in year one, then 10–15% a year until year five.
- Seats and extras. Four-seaters add 15–25%, six-seaters 40–60%. Lift kits, lights, roofs and rain enclosures add value on estates where carts are daily transport.
- Condition. Torn seats, cracked bodies, faded paint and coastal rust all cost real money to fix.
2. Choose where to sell
| Route | Typical net price | Time | Risk & effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private (Gumtree, Facebook, estate groups) | Highest headline, but expect 10–15% negotiated off at the door | 2–8 weeks | Viewings, no-shows, payment scams, transport |
| Dealer trade-in | Lowest — 20–35% under private | Only when buying new | Low |
| Specialist buyer (WeBuyCarts) | Firm written offer between the two | Offer in 24 h, collected in days | None — free collection, EFT before we drive away |
If you have time and don't mind strangers at your home, a private sale can net a little more. If you want it gone this week, a specialist buyer usually wins on the net number once you count transport and the discount most private buyers negotiate.
3. Photos that get you a better price
Six phone photos, in good light, cart washed: front three-quarter, rear three-quarter, seats and dash, batteries with the seat lifted (show the date stamps), the serial plate, and any damage. Honest damage photos build trust and prevent renegotiation at collection.
4. Paperwork in South Africa
Golf carts are not registered with the licensing department unless they are used on public roads, so there's no NATIS change of ownership. What a buyer will want:
- A sale agreement (we send one to sign on your phone) recording the parties, the cart, the price and the serial number.
- Your ID on the day, to confirm you're the seller named in the agreement.
- Proof the cart isn't financed or leased (if it is, the finance house must be settled first).
- The charger, both keys and any invoices for batteries or services.
If the cart belongs to a body corporate, club or estate fleet, the sale must be authorised by someone with the mandate to sell — get it in writing.
5. Avoid the scams
The common ones targeting cart sellers: fake proof-of-payment screenshots, "my courier will collect" buyers who never pay, overpayment refund tricks, and buyers who arrive with less cash than agreed and pressure you at the door. Never release the cart before the money clears in your account, and never accept a "pending" EFT as payment.
6. Selling to WeBuyCarts
Send photos at webuycarts.co.za/sell/golf-cart, get a written offer within 24 hours, accept online, sign the agreement on your phone, pick a collection slot. Our driver checks the cart against your photos, you show your ID, and we pay by EFT with proof of payment before we load. If your bank is slow to clear, we wait.
