Selling a golf cart on a golf estate — rules, timing and getting the best price

What estate rules mean for your sale, why estate carts fetch a premium, the best time to sell (hint: before the house transfers), and how collection works through security.

By the WeBuyCarts buying team, South Africa

Short answer: Estate carts — from Fancourt and Pezula to Zimbali, Pecanwood and Val de Vie — are the most sought-after used carts in South Africa: low hours, garaged, often lithium, and configured for daily use (roofs, lights, rear seats). Most estates require carts to be registered with the HOA, and the buyer of your home usually can't just take over your registration. Selling before transfer, with collection arranged through security, is the cleanest path.

Why estate carts fetch more

They live in garages, do short trips on tar and paving, and are serviced by the estate's cart workshop or a local dealer. Add the extras estate life demands — roof, windscreen, lights and indicators, rain enclosure, four seats — and you have exactly the specification the next estate buyer wants. We pay for that.

Check your estate's rules first

  • Registration. Most HOAs register carts to a stand number and issue a permit or number plate. Ask the estate office what happens on sale — typically the permit is cancelled and the new owner (if on the same estate) re-registers.
  • Approved suppliers. Some estates have preferred cart suppliers and rules on what may be driven on the roads (speed limiters, lights). None of that stops you selling; it just affects who can buy it on the estate.
  • Access for collection. Every estate has a visitor procedure. Register our driver as a contractor or visitor for the collection date and time, or send us the visitor code with your booking.

The best time to sell

If you're selling your home, sell the cart before transfer, once you know your move-out date. Buyers of estate homes often want to choose their own cart, and estate agents will tell you the cart rarely adds to the property price — you get more selling it separately. Book collection for the week before you move.

What to include

Charger, both keys, the estate permit (so it can be cancelled), and any invoices for batteries or services. Photograph the batteries with the seat lifted — estate carts are often lithium, and a clear pack label adds to the offer.

How collection works with WeBuyCarts

Accept our written offer online, sign the sale agreement on your phone, pick a two-hour collection window. We'll confirm the driver's name and vehicle for security. On the day the driver checks the cart against your photos, you show your ID, and we pay by EFT with proof of payment before loading. Many of our George, Ballito and Gauteng collections are same- or next-day.
